Chapter 23 Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) assist veterans and their families in receiving their earned benefits from service in the U.S. Military.

If you are filing a new VA disability claim, an increase, an appeal, or just don't know where to start, follow this checklist.

Quick Checklist

  1. Contact a VSO to review your situation and build the right plan. See our VSOs.
  2. Gather key documents: DD214, VA/DoD letters, medical records (civilian + VA), medication list, and (if applicable) marriage/birth certificates.
  3. Write down your timeline: when the condition started, where you were treated, and how it impacts work and daily life.
  4. Don't send SSNs by email. Use secure VA channels or meet in person.
  5. Track your claim and respond quickly to VA requests for evidence.
